5 things to think about when hiring a food photographer

A good food photo is one that almost makes you drool. You can’t resist it: you just HAVE to taste this. Food photographers are the people who are specialized in photographing exactly that: food. Whether it’s packshots, products, recipes, or restaurant dishes. Here are 5 things to consider before you hire a food photographer.

1. What do you need?

It all starts with you. What do you need? As mentioned food photographers can make different kinds of photos and not all photographers make all types of photos. So do you need a simple packshot or recipe development with a photo?

2. What is your budget?

Before hiring a photographer it is smart to consider your budget. Does it allow for a photographer?

Often a photographer will make a custom quote for you. If they are above your budget feel free to message them what budget you had in mind and ask them what they might be able to do for that. Please also let the photographer know if you don’t want to work with them. It is just a brief email and they then know what to expect, we greatly appreciate it.

If you expect to need the photographer on a regular basis, always tell them. This provides them with a little more income security and they might be able to lower the price for you.

3. Is their style something you like?

While you are looking around on their socials/ website, look if you like their style. Most photographers have a very specific style. If you don’t like their style, it’s best to find someone else.

4. Do they have experience in food photography?

This might sound like an open door, but it is important to know that not all photography is the same. Some photographers like to change their subjects (weddings, architecture, fashion, etc.), while others feel more connected to one subject.

Check the social media of your photographer and their website. Previous work can tell a lot about their experience.

5. the click

Capturing food is about capturing a story. Therefore it is important the food photographer understands you and your story. You can often book a call to get to know each other and see if you’d like to work together. When you are on the same line, this will result in much better work.
